League of Legends Champion Review: Braum, The Heart of the Freljord

“The Heart of The Freljord”

Welcome all to the first of many League of Legends Champion Reviews! With the recent success of our League of Legends Game Nights, We’ve expanded into actual League of Legends coverage on the site! First up is Braum, The Heart of the Freljord. Braum is a support champion released last week and is currently available for 6300 IP, or 975 RP. He is the first true support released since Thresh was released in January of last year, and I must say it was well worth the wait.

Concussive Blows (Passive)

Braum’s basic attacks apply Concussive Blows. Once the first stack is applied, all basic attacks from Braum and his teammates apply further stacks. Upon reaching 4 stacks the target is stunned and is dealt bonus magic damage. After being stunned, Braum cannot stun the target again for a short duration, but his auto attacks do bonus damage during this time.

My thoughts: Concussive blows is an extremely powerful passive, that when paired with a marksmen with high attack speed or attack range, is also extremely deadly (Try Lucian for explosive results). The bonus magic damage it deals when it pops may surprise you. If you are playing Braum, or a Braum on your team gets the passive set, try your hardest to get it to 4 stacks. It is the bread and butter of this champions kit.

Q: Winter’s Bite

Braum propels freezing ice from his shield in a straight line dealing magic damage, based on his max health, slowing while applying a stack of Concussive Blows on the first target hit.

My thoughts: This is Braum’s only long range ability in the game(excluding his ultimate), and it offers very good poke, at a very low mana cost, while also applying concussive blows. Try sitting in the edge of a bush with it, then launch it right before an enemy champion walks in, follow up with an easy aa and get two stacks on his passive very quickly, your adc should be able to do the rest. When playing vs Braum it is key to dodge this skillshot.

W: Stand Behind Me

Braum leaps a nearby ally, positioning himself between his ally and the nearest enemy champion, granting both Braum and his ally bonus armor and magic resist based on his total armor and magic resist.

My thoughts: This ability combined with Unbreakable is a fantastic combination for getting allies out of sticky situations, or just used to block that pesty Piltover Peacemaker from dealing massive pain to your carry. Using this ability during engages will give both you and your adc an edge in the fight, as the bonus armor and magic resist is very large. Try using it to jump to an allied minion that is close to an enemy champion to catch them by surprise with a following Winter’s Bite.

E: Unbreakable

Braum raises his shield in a targeted direction, cancelling all damage from the first attack that hits the shield. All attacks after have reduced damage until the shield is lowered. Braum intercepts projectiles with Unbreakable, causing them to hit him instead, even if they are targeted for his allies. He gains a minor speed boostwhile his shield is raised.

My thoughts: I’d say this is Braum’s strongest castable defensive spell, that when used with Stand Behind Me can have some truly epic moments. Having quick reaction times and knowing what damage is worth blocking or not, will set good Braum’s apart from the rest.

R: Glacial Fissure
Braum slams his shield into the ground, sending out a wide, long-range, skillshot that knocks up and damages all enemies caught in it before leaving behind a slowing field.

My thoughts: This skillshot is deceptively hard to use, try using it a few times vs bots, or in a normals game, to get a feel for it before hopping into ranked. You don’t want to be the guy that completely whiffed your ultimate. It works as a great engage or disengage, use it to protect any foes coming to attack your backline. Pair it with Yasuo for a great knock-up to help him get out the damage he needs.

The particles on his ultimate are nothing less than spectacular

My thoughts on his kit in a whole: Braum fills a role in League of Legends that was formerly left open, a true tank support. His job is to take the damage his carry would have otherwise taken, and use his passive to peel enemies away from his carries. His ultimate is a great engage for both dive comps and teams that don’t have their own form of engage. The slow left behind by glacial fissure can cripple the enemy teams ability to maneuver throughout their fight, and can even split the enemy team into two smaller squads. He is a blast to play as his kit has you constantly tossing yourself from teammate to teammate, while also trying to predict and counter any oncoming damage with his Unbreakable. You may find yourself dying more often on Braum then on other supports, and it may turn into a painful game if you fall too far behind, but remember, while you are dying to the Jax hammering your face in, the Kog,maw you jumped in front of is living to fight another day.

Braum comes from the frozen lands of the Freljord, and is a legend among their people. Stories are told of times when he protected a village from a great dragon, or when he raced down a river of lava (using his shield as a raft), or even his origin story where he obtained the shield itself. Braum has a slew of lines, all of which are either him being overly jolly, or being friendly beyond belief. His kit is all about protecting his allies, and his champion design reflects and strengthens that perfectly. Braum has a massive amount of special interactions, and his taunts will not disappoint either.

His joke spawns a poro friend!

Special Interactions

Braum has a massive amount of special interactions, anything from buying a pair of boots, to feeding the wild poros on the Howling Abyss!

( These lines will play when you make purchases in the shop! )
  • “These shoes… they are too tight!” (Boots of Speed)
  • “Ha-ha! Perfect!” (Any Tier 2 Boots)
  • “No sneaking up on Braum this time.” (Sightstone)
  • “Sight is the key to victory… also stone.” (Sightstone)
  • “Fire does the body good.” (Sunfire Cape)
  • “I’ve always wanted an on-fire cloak.” (Sunfire Cape)
  • ” Ohoohoo, nice and toasty!” (Sunfire Cape)
  • “Ooh, now I need marshmallow.” (Sunfire Cape)
  • “To friends I am snowfall, to enemies I am avalanche!” (Frozen Heart)
  • “My shield will protect this shield.” (Randuin’s Omen or Aegis of the Legion )
  • “A shield for my shield? I like it!” (Randuin’s Omen or Aegis of the Legion )
  • “This has the smell of a faraway land. Perhaps I shall see it one day.” (Ancient Coin)

Poro Snax:

(These trigger upon feeding poro-snax to a poro on the Howling Abyss. doing so also grows them a burly moustache! )
  • “Eat, eat and grow strong!”
  • “Train hard little poro and one day you will be strong like.. baby.”

Everyones favorite animal just got cuter!

Champion Interactions:

  • “You remind me of Agatha. Best cow back home!”
  • “Alistar, I have cow you should meet.”

  • “Mother gave me bear as child too, Annie.”

  • “Something fishy here? Eheheheh.”

  • “After this we share a drink. You like goats milk?”
  • “What’s your poison, Gragas? Mine’s milk.”

  • “Tryndamere! This is fun, right?”
  • “Are you having fun, my friend?”

  • “Your hair… we do not see things like this in the Freljord.”

Unbreakable (E) Interactions:

  • “Look, your axes bounce right off” – Draven Ult
  • “Good Shot, you’ll get them next time” – Ezreal Ult and Caitlyn Ult
  • “I’m having cold flashes” – Ashe Ult
  • “Heh, it is windy today” – Riven Ult
  • “Ah! A refreshing sea breeze” – Nami Ult

My Thoughts: Special interactions are, well, what make champions so special! New champions such as Braum are getting packed with more and more small details that you can’t help but love. Not to mention the satasfaction you get from jumping in front of an ally, blocking Caitlyn’s ultimate, then Braum suddenly says “Good Shot, you’ll get them next time”.

Launch Skin: Dragonslayer Braum

Every champion enters the league with one skin for purchase, and Braum’s does not dissapoint. Adding a vivid red color to all of his abilities, while completely redesigning his shield and armor, it’s the perfect starter skin for Braum and only costs 975 RP (Roughly $10 USD).

Shyvana didn’t stand a chance versus this dragonslayer

My Thoughts:
I already own it! Shouldn’t that be evidence enough? Well In case that doesn’t quite sell you…

Dragonslayer Braum also has a unique taunt where he sticks his head into his shield’s dragon mouth.
His pet poro is also a different color – all dragony!

“Today we fight each other. Tomorrow, we may fight together.”
