The latest episode of This Week on Xbox is out, and it teased some of the big games coming out in 2017. Larry Hyrb, known to Xboxers as Major Nelson, talked with people from a number of game studios to see what the future has in store for games on the Xbox One and Windows 10.
The first big one is Halo Wars 2. The upcoming RTS, whose predecessor will turn eight years old in only a couple of weeks, went into early access today for gamers who purchased the game’s limited edition. Dubbed as an “RTS for everyone” by 343i Studio Head Dan Ayoub, Halo Wars 2 launches on February 21 for Xbox One and Windows 10, synced via Xbox Play Anywhere.
We also got to hear from Craig Duncan, Studio Head at Rare, about the upcoming cel-shaded pirate game, Sea of Thieves. The game is slowly adding test players in the technical alpha, and is changing all the time with player feedback and the addition of new features. So many changes are being made that Duncan remarked “if I tell you what we’re doing now, like next week that will—that will be out of date”. If you want to know more about Sea of Thieves, Duncan also suggests that your best bet is to simply be a part of the community, and you’ll get the information you want.
Coming out of ID at Xbox, the highly anticipated indie game Cuphead is set to release in mid-2017. The boss-battling side-scroller set in the art style of classic cartoons from the 30s is one that has gotten many gamers talking since its announcement. We also learned a bit more about Phantom Dust and Voodoo Vince, two remasters of original Xbox games that are coming out this spring.
Finally, Hyrb got a chance to talk to Shannon Loftis, General Manager at Microsoft Studios about Crackdown 3. The game is set to be bigger and better than the first two in the series, with “smarter enemies, more vehicles, new weapons…and the explosions.” Like the rest of the games covered in this latest update, Crackdown 3 will be releasing this year.
